Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1D research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered.

Jacob Sierzenski's Fund-a-Cure Story

Please join me in the fundraising effort for this organization.

A month before I was diagnosed I stared feeling pretty tired and drinking more water than I drank before. Let me tell you, I don't really like water either. We dismissed this since this was December and I was doing more karate and I had a lot of school work. When my winter break began, I knew something was wrong. Instead of waking up to watch tv and play video games, I just wanted to sleep and drink. I don't remember much after Christmas but my parents looked really worried and after going back to sleep after waking up, they took me to the lab at Christiana to get my bloodwork. We came home and my mom said my heart rate was really high and took me to the emergency department where my dad works. When we got to the ED, my dad already knew what I had. He started talking to my mom, she did not take it very well. They told me I had diabetes. I didn't really understand, but I felt awful. The other doctors and nurses talked to me and it started to sink in. In a matter of hours I was transferred to AI du Pont and stayed for several days. Everyday was full of education of what my life was to be like. I knew at that point this was life changing and not life ending. I want to thank all the incredible people in my life, my parents, my brothers who tells me to check my blood sugar when I am cranky,  my grandparents, my awesome school nurse, Mrs Mills who is now a part of my family, my doctors and nurse educators who give me great advice and make sure I am well, all my friends and family who give constant support and the JDRF who gave me my Hope bag and the hope to keep going!!!!

Your personal experience reminds me of the quote by Sir Winston Churchill..."The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty. I hope you will always see the opportunities in life. Grandmom Sandy & Grandpop "
