Over fifteen years ago, my son, then a sophomore in college, brought a young lady “home to meet his parents.” We liked her immediately. What's not to like about a pretty, sweet enthusiastic young women, who obviously had a zest for life? She mentioned, almost in passing, that she had recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I had had some experience with the disease with a few students during my teaching career, but I was not what anyone would call an expert. Basically, I was slightly knowledgeable about the signs of high or low blood sugar, period!
Even as a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic, Megan never complained. We never saw her test, or take insulin, nor could we discern times when she may not have felt well. She always was just Megan...sweet, pretty and bubbly. We grew to love her in a very short period of time.
Fast forward twenty years. My daughter-in-law, Megan (pictured left with my son Chad and grandson Brayden), still has type1 diabetes. She still shines so much brighter than the condition she must deal with twenty four hours a day. She is a wonderful wife, a fantastic mother to our nine year old grandson, a preschool teacher with the patience of Job, a steadfast friend to many, and a loyal, loving family member who values family above all else. I can truly say I love her like a daughter. She has had physical ups and downs over the years, and a few serious episodes to deal with, but she continues to manage her condition with grace and commitment which makes me so proud.
I, in turn, am proud to work with JDRF on the Hope Ball Committee as a tribute to Megan and everyone who must cope with the challenge of Diabetes. I hope that my efforts contribute to turning type one into type none.
This year the members of the Hope Ball Committee have committed to making a Fund A Cure gift together. Fund A Cure is a unique opportunity to make a gift of any amount in
support of JDRF’s mission. 100% of Fund A Cure donations support
research and research-related education, allowing your dollars to make
the highest impact on our path to a cure.
I am asking
anyone who is able to please donate and join me, and the Hope
Ball Committee in our efforts to support Fund A Cure.
With sincere gratitude,
Diane
